Understanding our quality standards and certification process

Our Certificates & Standards

Comprehensive quality standards and certification programs for botanical products

SHAL Standard

SHAL is our new, transparent quality standard for herbs, plant components, and botanical products—built to reduce ambiguity in the market and raise trust across the value chain.

Scope

Applies to whole botanicals, cuts, powders, extracts, and finished products where plant‑derived actives are the core functional ingredients.

Pillars

  • Identity (species/authenticity)
  • Purity (contaminants & residues)
  • Potency (markers/actives)
  • Integrity (chain‑of‑custody & labeling)

Grades & Labels

Clear, auditable grade bands with pass/fail thresholds for critical markers. Each label maps directly to analytical criteria—no marketing ambiguity.

Governance

Method files, control materials, and decision trees maintained by Suisse Lab with external peer review and revision control.

Certification Flow

  1. 1Sampling & submission (with RMA)
  2. 2Testing to SHAL methods
  3. 3Assessment vs. grade thresholds
  4. 4Report & digital certificate (QR‑verifiable)

Roadmap

  • 2025: Core herbs & extracts (e.g., licorice, turmeric, chamomile)
  • 2025–26: Expanded matrices & finished products
  • Ongoing: Public method notes & proficiency ring tests

SHAL 408 — Saffron Quality Standard & Certification

SHAL 408 is the next-generation, laboratory-based quality framework for Crocus sativus L. (saffron), ensuring identity, purity, potency, and integrity through advanced methods.

What We Measure

  • Potency — Crocin, Picrocrocin, Crocetin, and Safranal quantified by HPLC and LC-MS.
  • Fraud Protection — detection of synthetic dyes and adulterants using advanced analytical techniques.
  • Herbicides & Fungicides — monitored after QuEChERS treatment with HPLC/LC-MS at EU MRL thresholds.
  • Heavy Metals — up to 64 elements analyzed using ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma).
  • Microbiological Safety — fungi counts, plus E. coli, Enterococcus, and Clostridium spores.

Why It Matters

Unlike traditional methods that rely on UV-Vis spectroscopy and are prone to errors from overlapping peaks and synthetic colors, SHAL 408 uses multiple validated analytical techniques for accurate, reliable results. This creates confidence across farmers, traders, regulators, and consumers.

Certification Levels

  • Premium
SHAL 408 Premium — highest grade for potency, purity, and authenticity.
  • Standard
SHAL 408 Standard — compliant baseline for safe, authentic saffron trade.
  • Fail
Fail — samples not meeting thresholds cannot be certified.

Digital Certification

All certifications are issued as digitally verifiable documents (QR-code enabled), backed by lab data.
